The first Edition of Harcourt Brace
NOTICEOn 1948 Curtise Hitchcock died. Eugine Reynal sold both the Reynal & Hitchcock inc. and the copyrights of their issues to Harcourt, Brace & Company. HB never issued TLP/LPP on 1943. HB succeeded the copyright of The Little Prince on 1948, not on 1943. Later they issued "their 1st edition" of The Little Prince/Le Petit Prince on 1955 or so, that were different from the real 1st editions of R&H (see below). HB express their printing number by their own code; neither state the printing number clearly nor the print date. Confer my page; Publication History of The Little Prince in U.S.A. |
| Their covers and dust jackets. (In this picture the covers will look like pale because of reflexion of the light. The correct colors are shown below.) |
The question is the bottoms of the spines.

| "Harcourt Brace and Company" on the jackets (left, respectively) and "Reynal & Hitchcock" on the spines (right, respectively). The second picture shows bottom parts of the spines in enlarged format. |

The publisher's code "K.7.56" and "L.8.57" means "11th print, July, 1956" and "12th print, August, 1957", respectively.
The copyright were (not the "Harcourt Brace" but) the Reynal & Hitchcock, inc. |

Only the cover and the copyright are "Reynal & Hitchcock" edition. I guess this versions were issued more than 14 printings or through omore than 10 years. This put a very frustrating enygma. You may think "Only the jucket will be Harcourt Brace and Company's and book itself will be Reynal & Hitchcock's". It isn't. Undoutedly the pages are Harcourt Brace and Company's. |
